Desert
South Africa
Although only about a tenth of South Africa’s land is arable, most supports more life than the northwestern corner of the country.1 2 There, the Southern Namib and Kalahari Deserts stretch down to the west of The Bushveld. The Kalahari’s name comes from a word meaning “place without water,” and temperatures in the desert range from the 40s to well over 100 °F.3
