Desert

Arizona, USA

Contrary to popular belief, not all of Arizona is desert, but the state does encompass portions of all four deserts in North America: the Sonoran, the Mojave, the Chihuahuan, and the Great Basin.1 The Grand Canyon sits within the Great Basin Desert, which is considered a “cold” desert since most of its precipitation arrives in the form of snowfall.2 Of the remaining three, the Sonoran may be best known due to its iconic saguaro cacti, which grow nowhere else.3
