The Bushveld

Visitors to The Bushveld in Africa need expect to see no great stands of tall trees. Savanna and grasslands are the norm instead, and it is little wonder; the loosely defined region encompassed by South Africa and neighboring countries receives no more than a couple of feet of rain each year.1 2
The term “Bushveld” comes from the Afrikaans “bosveld,” which means “bush field”—an apt description of the land with its tall grasses and scrabbly, thorny trees.3
