Fraser Island

Although it is over 75 miles long and covers an area of more than 700 square miles, Fraser Island is in essence the world’s largest sandbar.^{1 2} More than 100 freshwater lakes and ponds dot the island, which is renowned for its massive sand dunes, tropical rainforest, and miles upon miles of unbroken white beaches. High temperatures on the island average around 80°F in the summer, while the average low during winter months is only 10–15 degrees cooler.^{3 4}

Fraser Island, which is located northeast of Brisbane, Queensland, is named for Eliza Fraser, a sea captain’s wife who was shipwrecked on the island in 1836.⁵
