Flinders Ranges
South Australia, Australia
Flinders Ranges are a series of mountains that stretch over roughly 500 miles of South Australia.1 With high temperatures reaching well over 100°F during the summer months and rainfall varying from virtually non-existent during some years to torrential in others, the area can be harsh, but it contains what some authorities claim is the most spectacular scenery in the state.2 3
Among the best known sites in Flinders Ranges are Wilpena Pound, a huge natural amphitheater that covers above 30 square miles, and St. Mary’s Peak, the ranges’ tallest mountain at over 3,800 feet high.4 There are also a variety of valleys, creeks, and trees that provide shelter from the sun for kangaroos, wallabies, parrots, and emus.5 6
Although best known for their scenic vistas, Flinders Ranges are also geologically active. Scientists record hundreds of small earthquakes in the area every year.7
