Forest
Canada
At least one early Canadian stamp pictured lumberjacks at work. That is a logical subject choice considering that over 40% of Canada is covered by forests, and roughly one-tenth of the world’s wooded land sits within the country’s borders.1
Depending on who is doing the counting, Canada has eight to 12 distinct forest regions ranging from the Acadian Forest in the easternmost Maritime Provinces to the Coast, Columbia, and Montane Forests in the West.2 3 4 The stamp shown here reproduces a painting by Canadian artist Lawren Harris, “Snow II,” which pictures one of those forests during the winter.5
