Aurora Australis
Southern Hemisphere
The Aurora Australis, or southern lights, are colorful streamers and arcs of light that appear in the skies over Earth’s southern latitudes.1 Along with the Aurora Borealis, which can be seen only in the Northern Hemisphere, the Aurora Australis are created when charged particles in the solar wind collide with Earth’s magnetic field.2
