Four Mile Beach
Queensland, Australia
Four Mile Beach is one of the most popular beaches in northern Australia.1 2 The beach, which stretches south from Port Douglas to the mouth of the Mowbray River, is as much as a tenth of a mile wide at low tide and rip currents are highly unusual, making it a premium spot for both swimming and sunbathing.
Despite Four Mile Beach’s allure, there are potential dangers for the careless. During summer months, lifeguards set up nets to protect designated swimming areas from sea wasps, jellyfish that are known locally as “stingers.”3 In addition, the beach is occasionally closed due to huge saltwater crocodiles swimming off shore.4
