Coo Waterfall
Liège, Belgium
Although the Coo Waterfall is not the largest waterfall in Belgium, it is one of the best known and a major attraction in the town whose name it bears.1 The waterfall is located on the Amblève River, and its waters drop nearly 50 feet before continuing their journey below the falls.2
The Coo Waterfall is actually comprised of two distinct falls. The smaller of the falls, which can be seen near the right edge of the stamp pictured here, has existed since at least the 1400s.3 Monks designed the larger fall in the 1700s to help prevent flooding in a nearby village.
