Cooks Bay

North Island, New Zealand

Just to the east of New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula lies Cooks Bay, which is itself part of the larger Mercury Bay.1 2 The names of both bays are directly related to a visit by Captain James Cook in November 1769. From the beach along Cooks Bay, the famous navigator was able to observe the transit of Mercury, which helped him determine his longitude and the North Island’s location on Earth.3
