Cliff

Réunion

The result of volcanic activity, Réunion rises from the Indian Ocean several hundred miles to the east of Africa.1 2 The island is a beautiful but rugged spot of land shaped by both its volcanism and the weather, and some of its steep cliffs are nearly 1,000 feet tall.3

Réunion’s cliffs are popular with rock climbers, but they also serve as White-tailed Tropicbird nesting sites.4 To avoid disturbing the seabirds, climbers have installed nesting boxes on some portions of the cliffs and moved climbing routes to other areas.
