Black Mesa

Multiple tablelands in New Mexico are called Black Mesa, and the repeated name can lead to some confusion.¹ The landscape depicted on the stamp displayed here, however, is unquestionably in northern New Mexico. Artist Georgia O’Keeffe created the painting featured on the stamp—“Black Mesa Landscape, New Mexico/Out Back of Marie’s II”—in 1930 after spending time at a friend’s ranch in the area.²
