Black Mesa
New Mexico, USA
Multiple tablelands in New Mexico are called Black Mesa, and the repeated name can lead to some confusion.1 The landscape depicted on the stamp displayed here, however, is unquestionably in northern New Mexico. Artist Georgia O’Keeffe created the painting featured on the stamp—“Black Mesa Landscape, New Mexico/Out Back of Marie’s II”—in 1930 after spending time at a friend’s ranch in the area.2
