Bavarian Forest National Park

Bavaria, Germany

Bavarian Forest National Park, which was established in 1970, is Germany’s oldest national park.1 Located in Bavaria along the border between Germany and the Czech Republic, the park encompasses more than 90 square miles of land. Although the area is largely undeveloped, more than 350 miles of trails for hiking, cycling, and skiing provide easy access for visitors and ample opportunities to spot several important bird species that make their home there.2

As a whole, European forests are very carefully managed, but the officials in charge of Bavarian Forest National Park have adopted a policy of “leaving nature to its own devices.”3 Because of this, the forests within the park are gradually transforming to a more natural state. The area is home to one of the largest European silver firs, a massive tree standing approximately 175 feet tall.4
