Astypalaia
Greece
Politically and historically, Astypalaia is Greek; geographically, it is closer to Turkey than it is to mainland Greece.1 Some observers say the island, which is part of the Dodecanese in the Aegean Sea, is shaped like a butterfly, with an isthmus connecting its two main parts.2 3 Astypalaia has several beaches, some of which are fairly isolated from the island’s more heavily populated areas.4
