Ashtamudi Lake

In the Malayalam language, Ashtamudi means “eight-coned” or “eight branch.”^{1 2} Considering that Ashtamudi Lake has eight prominent branches, its name is most appropriate.

Ashtamudi Lake is located in Kerala near the southern tip of India.³ Its banks are lined with coconut and palm trees, and fishermen transverse its waters in search of a good catch. The lake is fed by the Kallada River, with the water ultimately discharging into the Arabian Sea.⁴
