Arenal Volcano

Alajuela Province, Costa Rica

Arenal Volcano, which in Spanish is called Volcán Arenal, towers more than a mile above the surrounding landscape in northern Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province.1 2 The volcano rumbled and shook for more than four decades following a violent 1968 eruption that wiped out three villages and killed dozens of people.3 In recent years, Arenal Volcano has grown more quiet, but scientists say additional volcanic activity is possible, and perhaps likely, in the future.
