American Landscapes
USA
Stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, America is a land of “sweeping grandeur” and “astonishing beauty.”1 Within its borders lie everything from the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the driest depths of Death Valley.
The United States postage stamp pictured here features Asher B. Durand’s “Summer Afternoon.” It is unknown who produced the label shown, but it pictures two different unidentified landscapes: a stone arch with a lake or ocean in the background, and a wooded valley with mountains as its backdrop.
