Coral Island
Red Sea, Egypt
Coral Island, also known as Pharaoh’s Island, is located in the Gulf of Aqaba at the northern end of the Red Sea.1 The island itself is composed of granite, but coral reefs are situated in the surrounding waters, and the site is a popular destination for divers.2
In addition to the nearby reefs, Coral Island is known for the ruins of a fortress built by 12th century crusaders.3 Looking even further back in history, some authorities believe the island may have been connected with Ezion Geber, a biblical city mentioned in 1 Kings.
In the past, Israel claimed the area in which Coral Island sits, which explains its appearance on the Israeli stamp pictured here.4
