Coconut Trees

North Efate Islands, Vanuatu

Vanuatu has been an independent nation for years, but in times past European powers wielded great influence over the group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean. It was during those times that a number of coconut palm plantations were established; their vestiges remain to this day, and visitors have the opportunity to sample fresh coconut juice.1 2

Naturally, the people of Vanuatu also benefit from coconut production. On some of the country’s drier islands, residents have used the juice as a substitute for drinking water.3
