The Balconies
Victoria, Australia
The rock outcropping now known as The Balconies was at one time called the “Jaws of Death,” but was renamed by tourism officials who worried about scaring off potential visitors.1 The less edgy name has done nothing to reduce the site’s popularity, however, and as a favorite subject for photographers, it is arguably one of Australia’s most iconic views.
The Balconies is located in Grampians National Park, or Gariwerd, in western Victoria.2 From its top, visitors can gaze out over the Victoria Valley, which is nestled among the Grampians Mountains, named after one of Scotland’s major mountain ranges.3
