Acadia National Park

Maine, USA

At the end of the 19th century, Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine was a favorite vacation spot for several of America’s wealthiest families.1 Even today, their influence on the area that is now largely within the confines of Acadia National Park is evident. Broken-stone carriage roads that the region’s wealthy patrons commissioned serve as popular paths for cycling.2

In addition to its natural features ranging from mountains to beaches, Acadia National Park is home to several hundred different bird species, making it a popular destination for bird-watchers.

One of the park’s prominent features is Great Head, a peninsula on the east side of Mount Desert Island.3 From the peninsula, visitors can look out over the Atlantic Ocean.
